GW rolls to fourth straight win, 68-39
WASHINGTON - GW women's basketball didn't let a 10-day layoff or the emotions of Senior Day cause any concern on Sunday afternoon, dominating George Mason, 68-39, for a fourth straight victory.
The Colonials have won all four games in the winning streak by at least 15 points with the 29-point triumph marking their largest A-10 win since an 80-49 victory over George Mason on Feb. 18, 2017.
GW took over the contest early, scoring 14 straight points to open a 20-7 edge late in the first quarter. Redshirt junior Gabby Nikitinaite canned a pair of 3-pointers in the stretch, setting the tone for a breakout day for the NIU transfer.
The Buff & Blue's defense took over after the first quarter, limiting George Mason to just four points in the next 15 minutes en route to building a 42-15 advantage midway through the third. GW forced 24 turnovers, leading to 26 points, and held the Patriots to 32% shooting on the day.
Nikitinaite reemerged in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 straight points, including two more long balls, to swell the lead to 61-37. She hit five 3-pointers in total, finishing with a season-high 22 points on an efficient 8-of-14 shooting.
Graduate students Jasmine Whitney and Sydney Zambrotta were honored prior to the game for Senior Day and shined in-game. Whitney posted another absurd stat line with nine points, seven rebounds, six steals and six assists with no turnovers in 37 minutes. Zambrotta knocked down a 3-pointer to give GW a 30-point lead in the fourth quarter, adding two assists, a block and a steal.
First-year Ali Brigham finished a rebound shy of her first career double-double, registering 12 points and nine boards.
With the A-10 regular season wrapped up, GW will await its seeding in the Atlantic 10 Championship, which starts on Wednesday, March 10. Prior to that, though, the Buff & Blue will welcome Fordham on Thursday for a non-conference matchup to round out the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
