Buff & Blue downed Mount St. Mary's in 2OT
WASHINGTON - Making his return to the GW men's soccer lineup after missing most of the 2019 season due to injury, Oscar Haynes Brown delivered in familiar fashion on Saturday afternoon, scoring the golden goal in the 102nd minute for a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's on the Mount Vernon Campus.
In the season opener for both sides, the Colonials and Mountaineers took their scoreless battle into the second overtime period before Haynes Brown delivered the game-winning score off an assist from first-year Tim Neumann.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 102nd Minute: Haynes Brown nabbed a steal on the Mount St. Mary's side of the field and laid off to Neumann, who fed an excellent pass into space to free Haynes Brown behind the defense. The senior finished his one-on-one opportunity with a deft shot around the charging keeper to win it. (GW 1, Mount St. Mary's 0)
- Limited to 25 minutes in one appearance in 2019, Brown found the net for the first time since a two-goal effort in a victory over St. Bonaventure on Oct. 10, 2018. The forward from London, England, now has 18 goals in 27 career games.
- With the assist, Neumann, a first-year from Daun, Germany, recorded a point in his collegiate debut. The midfielder got the start and logged 76 minutes.
- Justin Grady made three saves, including one just before the game-winning goal, to earn the shutout in net. It was his fourth clean sheet in eight career starts.
- On a blustery afternoon in the nation's capital, GW outshot Mount St. Mary's, 15-3, including a 3-1 advantage in overtime. The Mountaineers put all three of their attempts on net.
- In addition to Neumann, defenders Hrólfur Sveinsson and Aaron Kronenberg earned starts in their first collegiate action. Rookies Demi Amigun and Tobias Williams also debuted.
UP NEXT: GW is set to return to action Tuesday afternoon, visiting UMBC in a rescheduled contest after the teams were postponed due to inclement weather last weekend.
