WASHINGTON - A scintillating defensive effort was the name of the game yet again for GW women's basketball on Sunday afternoon, as the squad shut down a red-hot St. Bonaventure bunch to the tune of a 56-39 thrashing at the Smith Center.
Coming off a second half on Friday in which GW limited Duquesne to just 14 points, the Buff & Blue put the clamps on St. Bonaventure, limiting the Bonnies to just four points in the opening 10 minutes to open up a 10-point edge that they would hold in the second quarter for a 25-15 lead at the break.
SBU, which entered Sunday averaging 71.3 ppg during its three-game winning streak, clawed back within two, 29-27, late in the third quarter. But a quick 6-0 burst from first-year Ali Brigham and graduate student Jasmine Whitney bumped the lead back to eight.
The lead was seven with six minutes left when the Buff & Blue put the game away with a 7-0 run, accented by the second 3-pointer of the day from sophomore Essence Brown, who finished with a career-high 10 points and seven rebounds.
Brown was the spark off the bench, facilitating the typical catalysts of Brigham and Whitney. Brigham posted 15 points on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting while Whitney flirted with a triple-double for the second straight game with nine points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
Whitney also had an impact on the defensive end, holding the reigning A-10 Player of the Week Asianae Johnson to just two points on 1-of-7 shooting.
In total, the Buff & Blue held St. Bonaventure to 29.8% shooting and 21 points below their season average. GW dominated the glass, 39-24, and outscored the Bonnies in the paint, 30-18.
Offensively, GW knocked down five more 3-pointers and shot an efficient 46.9% from the floor, trailing only Friday's 51% for the best mark of the year.
Next up is a revenge opportunity for the Colonials as they welcome Davidson to the Smith Center on Thursday for a 5 p.m. tip. GW will be looking to avenge a 66-62 loss to the Wildcats on New Year's Day.
