Buff & Blue to send four swimmers to Junior Nationals
Fresh off a successful midseason meet, GW swimming and diving is set to finish its fall competition schedule this week by sending representatives to a pair of meets.
Four rookie swimmers - Julia Knox, Molly Smyers, Philip Moldovanu and Bode Ringenbach - will be in action at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships on Thursday through Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.
The rest of the Buff and Blue will compete vs. Navy on Friday in a series of time trials as part of an unscored meet at Lejeune Hall. The first session of racing begins at 10:30 a.m.
Durde Matic shattered the Atlantic 10 record in the 100 fly, winning the event in a time of 45.72 seconds that ranks No. 15 in the nation so far this season, and the junior from Belgrade, Serbia, also combined with Karol Mlynarczyk, Marek Osina and Tyler Kawakami to take down conference marks in the 200 medley relay (1:26.91) and 400 medley relay (3:09.40).
Osina posted a first-place finish in the 200 back with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:43.84 and also landed runner-up in the 200 IM (1:45.60) and 400 IM (3:50.47). Mlynarczyk was second in the 100 back and posted a season-best time in that event (:46.62) as part of the record-breaking 400 medley relay.
On the women's side, Carly Perri qualified for three championship finals and posted all-time top 10 times in each event, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 200 free in 1:49.57. Erin McCarthy recorded top-six finishes in the 200 free (1:50.57), 500 free (4:53.13) and 1,650 free (16:50.22).
In recognition of that excellence, GW swept the A-10 weekly awards with Matic and Perri receiving Performer of the Week honors and Smyers and Connor Rodgers landing Rookie Performer of the Week awards.
NATIONAL STAGE:Â Knox, Smyers, Ringenbach and Moldovanu head to Junior Nationals off strong performances at Princeton.
Smyers qualified for the championship final in both the 400 IM (4:23.48) and 200 fly (2:03.50) and also won the B final of the 500 free (4:56.50).
