Aluminum bottled water supplier will help Department’s support of campus single-use plastics ban
The George Washington University Department of Athletics announced today that aluminum bottled water company Mananalu has joined the department as a proud partner.
Â
The company, based in Boone, NC and owned by actor and environmentalist Jason Momoa, is supporting the department as part of the broader university's effort to eliminate single-use plastics from campus.
Â
"We are so grateful to Mananalu for joining us in our mission to make GW Athletics and the broader university more sustainable," said GW Director of Athletics Tanya Vogel. "Mananalu is a company that shares our values and our ambition to tackle big challenges."
Â
Through the partnership, Mananalu has contributed thousands of bottles of water in fully-recyclable aluminum bottles for use by student-athletes, coaches and staff for practices, travel and events. Additionally, the company will sponsor a sustainability themed basketball game, provide student giveaways, and assist the athletics department in reclaiming aluminum at key events.
Â
"Mananalu does not want to solely be GW Athletics' water partner, we want to be their sustainability partner," said David Cuthbert, Mananalu CEO. "We're proud to partner with a university on the leading edge of environmental stewardship."
Â
In February 2021, GW announced that they would be eliminating single-use plastics from campus following calls from the student body and the work of a campus task force. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, less than 30% of single-use plastic bottles are recycled, and many end up in oceans.

About Mananalu
Mana - what? Mananalu is a water brand on a mission to eradicate single-use plastic water bottles. "Mana" means the sacred spirit of life in Hawaiian. "Nalu" means a powerful wave that pushes across the ocean. Founded by actor, environmentalist, and Hawaiian-native, Jason Momoa, we are fighting plastic pollution by bottling water in infinitely recyclable aluminum. The best part: For every can sold, we remove the equivalent of one plastic bottle from ocean-going waste. To learn more, visit www.mananalu.com.
