Colonials shoot season-best 52%, will play in third-place game Wednesday
NAPLES, Fla. - GW men's basketball shot a season-best 52% from the floor on Tuesday evening in the semifinals of the Naples Invitational, but Kent State matched the Buff & Blue shot for shot to pull out a 77-69 victory.
The Colonials trailed for the entirety of the second half but went on a 10-0 run to cut the Golden Flashes' lead to four with 45 seconds left. However, Kent State converted on a free throw and putback to extend the lead to seven, effectively ending the comeback attempt.
James Bishop led the team in scoring for the fourth-straight game, pouring in 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, with five assists. Joe Bamisile scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime, knocking down a trio of 3-pointers to go along with four rebounds and two assists.
First-year Brayon Freeman reached double digits for the second time in three games with 11 points, nine of which came in the second half.
The difference in the game, where both teams shot 52% from the floor, turned out to be Kent State's 10 made 3-pointers to GW's six. The Flashes also outscored GW 18-6 off turnovers.
The Buff & Blue had an early 11-3 burst to start the game but went quiet on offense over the next 10-plus minutes as Kent State scored 30 of the next 39 points to assume a 33-20 lead. GW scored six quick points prior to the break to get within seven, 33-26, at halftime.
Kent State quickly pushed the lead to 14 out of the break, and led by as many as 17, 50-33, four minutes into the half. GW continued to chip away, hitting nine consecutive shots at one point to get back in the game.
Former Duquesne guard Sincere Carry led the way for Kent, scoring 20 points with five rebounds and five assists.
GW will wrap up its time in Naples on Wednesday in the third-place game at 5:30 p.m. The Colonials will take on the loser of Missouri State and East Tennessee State.
