Colonials put four in double figures, advance to Naples Invitational Semifinals
NAPLES, Fla. - GW men's basketball opened up the Naples Invitational on Monday afternoon with a resounding 74-63 win over defending Horizon League champion Wright State. The Colonials advance to the semifinals of the inaugural event, taking on Kent State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
GW controlled the game, leading for 37 minutes with only one tie in the contest. The Colonials led by as many as 15 in the contest, shooting a season-best 47.5% from the floor while holding Wright State to 35% shooting and 12 points below its season scoring average.
James Bishop led four Colonials in double figures with 18 points, his third straight game of 18 or more, also securing five rebounds. Joe Bamisile came within a rebound of his second-straight double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Ricky Lindo Jr. provided 12 points with a career-high six assists, also providing six rebounds and three steals. Brendan Adams filled out the quartet with 10 points and four boards.
GW also got tremendous contributions from its bench with a season-high 14 points thanks to Brayon Freeman (eight points) and Hunter Dean (six points, nine rebounds).
The Buff & Blue defense set the tone by shutting out the Raiders for the first four minutes of the game. GW led 14-13 midway through the first half before breaking the game open with an 11-0 run over the next three minutes, punctuated by a Bamisile three-point play.
Leading by 10 at intermission, GW pushed the lead to 15 thanks to a series of five dunks from Dean, Bamisile and Lindo. Wright State made things interesting, getting to within five (63-58) with 5:15 left, but the Colonial defense didn't allow another field goal the rest of the game, and GW scored the next six straight to regain the double-digit advantage.
