Buff & Blue return to action Saturday at UMass
WASHINGTON - GW men's soccer fell to Dayton, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 contest on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Flyers went in front on an own goal in the 59th minute and managed to hold on in the face of late pressure from the Buff and Blue.
The home team was on the offensive for most of the final 20 minutes with eight of their 14 shots in the span, including a sequence in the final minute that forced the Dayton keeper to make a pair of saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 59th Minute: Jaden Jones-Riley streaked down the right side and sent a cross into the box that was swept into the net by a sliding defender for what turned out to be the game's lone goal. (Dayton 1, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- GW outshot Dayton, 14-11, on the day, boosted by an 11-7 edge after halftime. UD's Marc Kouadio made five of his six saves over the final 45 minutes.
- On the Buff and Blue's last chance, Oscar Haynes Brown had a flick denied in front before Christian Rader's rebound attempt was corralled by Kouadio with less than 20 seconds remaining.
- Matthew Brummet posted a team-high four shot attempts, including a pair of long-range tries on net that required diving saves to stop with his team chasing the equalizer.
- Justin Grady made a pair of saves in the GW net, both times denying quality looks from two-time A-10 Midfielder of the Year Kingsford Adjei.
UP NEXT: GW has two road trips on tap over the next week. The Buff and Blue will visit UMass on Saturday in A-10 play before heading to Wake Forest on Tuesday for their final non-conference contest.
