Looking to secure a berth in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championship, GW men's soccer heads to St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon for its regular season finale. It's a 2 p.m. kickoff at the Marra Athletics Complex.
GW currently sits tied for 10th in the A-10 standings with Dayton at seven points (2-4-1), but with a win and a bit of help elsewhere, the Buff and Blue could earn the eighth and final spot in the tournament field.
LAST TIME OUT: GW dropped a 4-0 decision to nationally-ranked Saint Louis last Saturday on Senior Day at the Mount Vernon Campus. After a scoreless opening half, the Billikens scored four times after the break to claim the victory and the conference regular season title.
WINNING WAYS: Oscar Haynes Brown converted an overtime penalty kick to beat George Mason, 2-1, on Oct. 20 for his third game-winning goal of the season and the 10th of his career.
Haynes Brown ranks tied for third in the A-10 and 22nd nationally with the three game-winning goals, which came vs. VMI (Aug. 26), Liberty (Sept. 7) and Mason. In a testament to his flair for the dramatic, the graduate student from London, England, has scored the program's last four golden goals, dating back to his rookie season in 2017.
STACKING SAVES: Justin Grady equaled a career high with six saves on Saturday vs. Saint Louis. It was the fifth time in his career that the junior goalkeeper has hit that mark, highlighted by his clean sheet vs. Dayton at the A-10 Championship last April.
Grady now has a career-high 57 saves on the season, a total that ranks sixth in the A-10 and 34th nationally. He has totaled 124 stops over his 34 career games.
STANDINGS CHECK: St. Bonaventure and UMass are currently tied for the eighth spot in the conference standings with nine points apiece. GW could leapfrog both of them with a victory to secure the No. 8 spot and a first-round date vs. Saint Louis.
The A-10 Championship begins next weekend with the quarterfinal round on campus sites before moving to the home of the top remaining seed for the semifinals (Nov. 12) and final (Nov. 14).
SCOUTING THE BONNIES: St. Bonaventure strengthened its bid for an A-10 Championship bid last Saturday with a 2-1 win at Dayton to improve to 3-4 in conference play. Umechi Akuazaoku and Matthew Wrobel provided the goals for the Bonnies in the road victory.
In the last meeting between these teams, GW claimed a 1-0 road win on Tom Cooklin's 74th-minute score back on Oct. 9, 2019.
