GW and Charlotte to Renew Acquaintances Tuesday
12/21/2020 12:16:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Former Atlantic 10 foes GW and Charlotte renew acquaintances in a Tuesday matinee at the Smith Center in another chapter between the schools in a book that's given the Foggy Bottom faithful one of the signature wins in program history. Ranked #6 in the country at time, GW hosted Charlotte on Senior Day in 2006 with its undefeated A-10 record on the line. The teams battled even through regulation and in the overtime session, a buzzer-beating Carl Elliot putback gave a sold-out crowd a thrilling win and an undefeated conference season for the Buff and Blue.
LAST TIME OUT
GW's fifth defeat of the year was in many ways deja vu for the Buff and Blue as all five losses have come by less than 10 points, three by less than five points, and Monday's defeat was the third straight game in which the teams were within a possession of each other in the game's closing minute. This one featured 22 lead changes and 10 ties, with eight lead changes coming in the overtime session alone.
HE'S HEATING UP
Despite setbacks in GW's last three games, Jamion Christian's preferred method of scoring -- 3-point shooting -- hasn't been a problem. Christian has asked Jamison Battle, James Bishop, Maceo Jack and Sloan Seymour to take 80-90% of GW's threes, and the group has responded. Over the last three games the foursome has connected on 22-of-48 3-pointers, good for a combined .458 3-point field goal percentage.
MOYER'S MARK
In addition to Bishop, who joined GW from LSU, Matt Moyer is another Power 5 transfer starting for GW this season. The grad student is making up for lost time in a career-best season in Foggy Bottom. Moyer is nearly averaging a double-double with 10.0 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game both mark career highs, while his rebounding average ranks third in the A-10.
BOARD GAMES
Moyer isn't the only member of the Buff and Blue doing work on the boards this season Chase Paar (7.7 rpg) and Battle (6.8) have also picked up their board game in their second seasons at GW. Paar and Battle rank 7th and 8th, respectively, in the A-10 this season in total rebounds.
A NEW BATTLE
Battle ranks 18th in the A-10 in points per game (15.8) and 13th in rebounds per game (6.8). Last year's A-10 leader in 3-point field goals made is showing off a multi-faceted game as a soph, and is one of just five players in the A-10 averaging at least 15 points and 6.5 rebounds this season, joining Tre Mitchell, UMass; Jordan Miller, GMU; Osun Osunniyi, St. Bona and Jordan Goodwin, SLU.
DC'S CHARM
Bishop, the sophomore transfer out of Baltimore, is currently third in the A-10 in both points per game (19.5) and assists per game (6.8) while his assist to turnover ratio (1.9 to 1) ranks 10th. Bishop's two nine-assist games this season mark career highs, while the Charm City guard has notched 20+ points in five of six games he's logged for the Buff and Blue after never hitting 20+ last season at LSU.
