Men’s Basketball Drops Overtime Stunner to William & Mary, 85-84

Two games last week took the George Washington men's basketball team on the road and despite being within a possession of a tie or the lead in both contests in the final minute, GW came away empty handed in the win column. On Monday night in front of a national television audience, the Buff and Blue did it again in search of a different result.
This time GW found itself down a pair with nine ticks left and the ball made its way to Sloan Seymour, who had his eyes on a go-ahead 3-pointer. Instead the sharpshooter was fouled and made two of three free throws to knot the game and give William & Mary the last shot. A GDUB stop in the final seconds sent the teams to overtime.
The extra session was fitting for the tight affair as neither side would budge and the lead was never more than two. Trailing 83-82 with 25 seconds remaining in OT, Matt Moyer crashed the boards and tipped in a miss to give GW a lead and the ball returned to William & Mary for their chance to match. Straight out of central casting for a Hoosiers remake, the Tribe's Luke Loewe took his turn in the spotlight. The guard accounted for the eighth lead change in the overtime session alone with a lay-in at the :13 mark, and GW had one last shot. When a James Bishop 3-pointer for the win came up short, William & Mary escaped with the win. In total, the game saw 22 lead changes and 10 ties.
GW's second half belied a first half of beautifully-executed offensive basketball as the team led the Tribe, 46-31, at the break. By halftime, Chase Paar was just four points shy of his career-high scoring total with 11, while his teammates did almost everything right on the offensive end. As a team, GW shot .541 from the floor in the opening stanza, committed just a single turnover, found 30 points in the paint and got a much needed scoring boost off the bench from Sloan Seymour and Jameer Nelson Jr., who both netted a half-dozen in the half, albeit from different zip codes. Seymour buried two long range 3s while Nelson did his work from point blank range.
Alas, the second half was a different story as GW couldn't maintain momentum. A 15-0 Tribe run sliced into the lead and 11 second half turnovers spelled trouble.
Loewe finished with a game-high 24 points for William & Mary to pace four of the visitors in double figures in scoring. Bishop finished with 21 to pace GW, and was gunning for a career-high 24 with his final errant attempt. Jamison Battle (17), Paar (13) and Moyer (10) also hit double digits.
Next up for GW is the final non-conference game of the season, next Tuesday at home against the visiting Charlotte 49ers in a 2 p.m. matinee.
