Men's Basketball Heads to Delaware Looking to Rebound
12/10/2020 2:58:00 PM | Men's Basketball
For more than 16 second-half minutes on Monday at UMBC, the George Washington men's basketball team showed that it has the offensive firepower to play with any team in the country. At the 17:20 mark in the second half, the Buff and Blue stared down a 25-point deficit. Sixteen minutes and 27 seconds of game play later, GW was within two after a 49-26 spurt that showed how quickly this team can put points on the board in Head Coach Jamion Christian's system.
With a road date looming at Delaware on Friday, GW will hope to put that firepower on display once again at the home of the 1-1 Blue Hens, who also fell at UMBC, 76-61, this week. Powered by sophomore transfer James Bishop, who leads the A-10 in both points per game (20.5) and assists per game (7.8), GDUB's offense also boasts the top scoring tandem in the conference in Bishop and fellow sophomore Jamison Battle, who has poured in 16.0 points per game this season and ranks 10th in the conference in scoring.
The MAYHEM leads to a fast and energetic pace of play, which tends to force the opposition to play fast as well. Accordingly, GW is the top rebounding team in the conference at 39.3 rebounds per game and the top defensive rebounding team in the A-10, scooping up opponents' misses and looking to quickly score on the other end. Impressively for Bishop, through the oft-frenetic play, the Baltimore product owns a 2.1-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio; good for the ninth best mark in the league.
Matt Moyer, another Power 5 transfer from Vanderbilt by way of Syracuse, has been a key cog and trigger man of GW's tempo, with his 8.8 rebounds per game ranking fifth in the Atlantic 10 and establishing far and away a new career-best season for the grad student after never averaging more than 3.4 boards per contest in his three seasons with the Orange and Commodores. Battle (8.3 rpg) and Chase Paar (8.0 rpg), yet another soph, are just behind Moyer in the A-10 in rebounding to comprise the top trio in the conference on the glass.
GW and Delaware last met last season in DC, when the Blue Hens came to Foggy Bottom undefeated and were handed their first loss of the season. Tip time from Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center is 7 p.m. on FloHoops.
