THE COMEBACK KIDS: GW authored its fifth double-digit comeback of the season on Sunday against UMass, doing so from 11 points back for the fourth time this year. It marked the third time this season that GW has erased such a deficit in the second half:
Largest Deficit | Time Remaining | Run to take lead | |
---|---|---|---|
Memphis | 11 (45-34) | 6:34, 3rd Quarter | 25-9 over next 11:28 |
Delaware | 10 (19-9) | 2:44, 1st Quarter | 22-7 over next 10:26 |
Quinnipiac | 11 (22-11) | 2:06, 1st Quarter | 33-21 over next 14:42 |
Duquesne | 11 (53-42) | 6:01, 3rd Quarter | 19-3 over next 14:13 |
UMass | 11 (33-22) | 7:18, 3rd Quarter | 17-2 over next 6:58 |
YOUNG, WILD & FREE: Redshirt freshman Tori Hyduke is the lone Colonial to start all 19 games so far this season, the second-most starts for a first-year under head coach Jen Rizzotti. Three of the top five first-year starters are from this year:
Number of Starts | Year | |
---|---|---|
Neila Luma | 31 | 2017-18 |
Tori Hyduke | 19 | 2019-20 |
Faith Blethen | 17 | 2019-20 |
Maddie Loder | 14 | 2018-19 |
Mayowa Taiwo | 13 | 2019-20 |
TAI-ING THINGS TOGETHER: Redshirt freshman Mayowa Taiwo led the charge against UMass Sunday with 14 points, her third double-digit performance of the season. GW is now 3-0 when she pours in at least 10 points in a game.
She also added eight rebounds, improving the Colonials to 8-5 when she records at least five boards. Taiwo has paced GW in rebounding eight times, most on the team, and has the only two double-digit efforts on the squad this year.
SERIES HISTORY: The Colonials and Hawks have eliminated each other in the postseason the last two years with GW besting SJU in the 2018 A-10 Championship and St. Joe's returning the favor in last year's first round contest. Saint Joseph's is the only A-10 team to have a winning record against GW (32-31) by virtue of winning both games last year.
A LOOK AT THE HAWKS: Saint Joseph's is 2-5 in league play following a 67-59 setback at crosstown rival La Salle on Sunday. As is typically the case, the Hawks are predicated by their play on the defensive end of the floor, leading the league (21st nationally) by allowing just 55.4 points per game this season. SJU has held five opponents below 50 points this year and is also the top team at defending the 3-pointer, limiting foes to 26.3% from deep (17th nationally).
Offensively, it's been a different story with St. Joe's averaging a league-low 55.3 points per game (52.6 in conference play). Katie Jekot averages a team-best 10.7 ppg for the year and is the lone player in double figures during league competition (11.1 ppg).
