Grad student records first double-double in a GW uniform
PHILADELPHIA - Fueled by the first GW double-double from graduate student Alexandra Maund and clutch shots in the second half from a supporting cast, GW women's basketball held off a late Saint Joseph's charge for a 56-50 win on Wednesday night at Hagan Arena.
Maund was the engine for the Colonials through a slow start, energizing an 11-0 run to go in front 15-12. Overall, GW, which once trailed 12-4, outscored St. Joe's 20-5 over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a seven-point advantage into the locker room, 24-17.
SJU's 17-point effort was the second-lowest output in a half for a GW opponent this season and the best defensive performance by the Colonials since Dec. 7 at Delaware.
GW then found its offensive stroke to begin the second half, hitting six of its first seven shots to open up a lead as large as 10. First-year Faith Blethen was the catalyst in the barrage, hitting a trio of 3-pointers on kickouts from Maund to equal her long ball total from the previous five games.
St. Joe's would not go away, though, ultimately using a 9-1 burst in the waning minutes to cut the GW lead to two, 52-50, with 46 seconds remaining. However, GW went to its reliable source with a Maund layup on the ensuing possession, forced a stop and then saw Blethen seal the game with a pair of free throws.
Maund tied her career high with a season-best 18 points on 9-of-14 shooting and notched her first double-double in the Buff & Blue (third career) with 10 rebounds, while also managing to dish out four assists.
Blethen scored all 11 of her points in the second half for her first double-digit effort since Dec. 7. Redshirt junior Sydney Zambrotta gave GW a trio of double-figure scorers with 11 points and four rebounds off the bench.
The Buff & Blue's second straight A-10 victory elevated the Colonials to 3-4 in league play ahead of a nationally-televised Super Sunday showcase at the Smith Center against Saint Louis. Tip is set for 2 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
