Potter finished with a season-high 26 points
WASHINGTON — It was a record-setting night in D.C. on Wednesday, when the George Washington Colonials hosted the George Mason Patriots in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action at the Charles E. Smith Center. Not only did GW Athletics set a new world record by hosting the largest gathering of people wearing a tricorn hat in one place at one time, but Head Coach Jamion Christian earned win number one in conference play at the helm of the Buff and Blue.
Playing without senior Arnaldo Toro and sophomore transfer Amir Harris, the Colonials lifted each other to a crucial win early in the conference season. Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Jamison Battle continued his scoring ways and sharp shooting with another sizzling performance from deep. The first-year from Minnesota canned five more triples in a sterling 5-of-8 night from three-point range on his way to 15 points. Battle was only outdone by his elder, senior point guard Armel Potter, who set the pace on the record-setting night with a season-high 26 points. The New York product also contributed seven assists and a half dozen rebounds in the victorious effort, while knocking down 12-of-15 freebies.
As a team, GW shot .490 from the floor and .471 from the land of plenty, getting all 73 points either in the paint (32), at the free throw line (17) or from three-point land (24) in a performance worthy of efficient basketball analytics praise. First years Chase Paar (season-high seven points and nine rebounds) and Shawn Walker Jr. (six points) were a combined 5-of-7 from the floor, while sophomore Mezie Offurum played the role of super-sub with a +9 +/- rating after an efficient 10:14 of court time that saw him sink a pair of buckets and all three free throw attempts, while swatting a pair of Mason shots on the defensive end.
GW led for 31:38 in the contest with its largest lead of 14 coming midway through the second half, and the Buff and Blue held on down the stretch. Mason was also limited by injury having lost senior Justin Kier to a foot injury prior to the game. AJ Wilson's 18-point, 11-rebound double-double led the Patriots.
With their first conference win under their tricorn hats, the Colonials now face another historic foe in the Massachusetts Minutemen Saturday. Game time from Amherst is 4:30pm live on NBCSN and the TuneIn radio app. A midweek trip ensues to New York to meet Fordham on Wednesday, January 22nd at 7pm, before the team returns home to the Smith Center faithful. GDUB's next home game is Saturday, January 25th at 4pm against the Saint Joseph's Hawks.
