Colonials make non-conference road trip to Big East foe
GW men's soccer is back in action Tuesday with a non-conference trip to Villanova.
The Colonials (2-4-1) face the Wildcats (4-2-1) in a 4 p.m. start at the Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa.
LAST TIME OUT: GW began Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, dropping a 1-0 decision to Rhode Island in double overtime on the Mount Vernon Campus. The Rams broke the scoreless deadlock with a golden goal by Filippo Tamburini in the 102nd minute.
Noah Lubin, a senior from Rye Brook, N.Y., earned his first career start in net for the Colonials and finished with seven saves.
MAX EFFORT: Max Holdsworth leads GW with seven points through seven games. The senior from England has already eclipsed his season total from a year ago (four points) with two goals and three assists.
Holdsworth was named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week last Monday after having a hand in all five goals in GW wins over Liberty and Brown. Both of his scores came via penalty kicks.
SANDRO'S SPARK: Sandro Weber had scored in three straight games before the shutout loss to Rhode Island.
The graduate student from Germany has provided a major lift in his first season in Buff and Blue, accounting for three of GW's six scores. He's currently tied for fourth in the conference in goals.
After coming off the bench early in the season, Weber has made five straight starts in the midfield. The newcomer leads the Colonials in both shots (20) and shots on goal (13).
SCOUTING VILLANOVA: After a 4-0 start, the Wildcats are winless in their past three games. Most recently, they dueled DePaul to a scoreless draw in their Big East opener on Saturday.
Lyam MacKinnon leads the squad with eight points via two goals and four assists. The first-year forward has factored in on six of the team's eight goals.
This is the first-ever meeting between GW and Villanova.
UP NEXT: GW returns to A-10 competition on Saturday, hosting George Mason on the Vern in a 3 p.m. start.
