
Men's Water Polo Closes Weekend with Sweep

Colonials dropped Johns Hopkins, Salem on Sunday
LEWISBURG, Pa. - Andrew Mavis and Andras Levai totaled eight goals apiece Sunday, helping GW men's water polo cruise to a doubleheader sweep at the Bucknell Invitational.
The 14th-ranked Colonials beat Johns Hopkins, 16-7, before wrapping the weekend at Kinney Natatorium with a 21-10 victory over Salem. The Buff and Blue improved to 9-3 on the season, heading into Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play.
GW 16, Johns Hopkins 7: A seven-goal first quarter sent the Colonials on their way to a comfortable win.
Mavis scored three of his team-high five goals in the opening period, helping the Buff and Blue build an early five-goal lead. The Blue Jays never got closer than four the rest of the way.
Levai added three goals, three assists and three steals, while Nick Schroeder tallied a goal and a team-high four helpers.
Jordan Blosser and Josh Yardley scored two goals apiece with Gabriele Simonti, Antonin Kralj and Chris Lee also scoring.
Matt Taylor piled up 18 saves in the victory, plus a steal, in leading a GW defense that limited Johns Hopkins to two goals after halftime.
GW 21, Salem 10: Levai recorded five goals to lead nine GW scorers as the Colonials dispatched the Tigers in the weekend finale.
The Buff and Blue grabbed control with seven goals in the opening period and then pulled away late with nine scores in the fourth. They led 12-7 before growing the advantage with their explosive final period.
Schroeder scored four times in the victory with Mavis (three goals), Blosser (three) and Kralj (two) also producing multi-goal efforts. Yardley, Simonti, Bender Russo and Nicholas Polydefkis scored in the victory, as well.
Simonti led the defensive effort with three field blocks and a steal, while Taylor tallied five saves in net.
UP NEXT: GW begins its MAWPC slate next weekend with a road trip that includes Saturday stops at Fordham and Wagner and a Sunday visit to La Salle.
