Colonials ceded game-winning goal in the 102nd minute
WASHINGTON - In its Atlantic 10 opener, GW men's soccer fell to Rhode Island, 1-0, on Saturday thanks to Filippo Tamburini's golden goal in the 102nd minute.
Playing before a packed crowd celebrating Colonials Weekend on the Mount Vernon Campus, the Buff and Blue dueled the Rams into the second overtime before coming up short.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 102nd Minute: GW keeper Noah Lubin stopped Stavros Zarokostas' initial shot, but Lucas Gesmundo touched the loose rebound to Tamburini for the game-winning score. (UMBC 1, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- Lubin stopped seven shots for the Colonials in his first career start between the pipes. The senior goalkeeper made five saves in regulation before blocking two more in overtime.
- GW outshot Rhode Island, 16-13, in the contest, though the Rams had the edge in tries on target, 8-3.
- Sandro Weber, Haukur Hilmarsson, Tom Cooklin and Max Holdsworth tallied three shots apiece. Weber accounted for two of the Buff and Blue's three shots on target.
- It was the second overtime game of the season for the Colonials, who dropped to 2-4-1 overall.
UP NEXT: GW treks to Villanova on Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with a 4 p.m. kickoff. The Colonials are back on the Vern next Saturday to host A-10 foe George Mason at 3 p.m.
