GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The George Washington men's rowing team concluded its 2019 season in historic fashion on Sunday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship on Lake Natoma.
The Varsity 8 highlighted the Colonials' weekend, winning the Third-Level Final on Sunday to notch the best finish in program-history at No. 13 in the nation.
The 2V8 rowed in a competitive Fourth-Level final and finished third to earn an end-of-season ranking of No. 21.
The 3V8 rounded out GW's entries with a third-place showing in the Third-Level final to clinch a final national ranking of No. 15.
Varsity 8
Lineup: Alex Maycock, Jay Jacobs, Patrick George, Matt Kerwin, Bob Hobert, Riley Toporowski, John Knies, Brendan Youmell, Berkeley Melvin (cox)
Saturday Semifinal: 2nd of 6 - 5:48.884
Sunday Third-Level Final: 1st of 6 – 5:48.910
Final Rank: 13th (best in program history)
Coach Davis on the V8: "The Varsity 8 raced great in their final. They really wanted to make the A/B semifinal, and when that didn't happen they were a little down, but they were able to regroup. They knew going into their final today that it was going to be a really tough race with Penn, Wisconsin, Columbia, and Navy because their times were all so similar throughout the weekend. We knew it was going to be a really close, five-boat race. They were just really able to focus on themselves and had a great second half of the race. They came from behind and finished 13th in the country, which is the best we've ever done. We're very proud of that fact and I'm very proud of them for doing that. They just had a really great row and it was nice to see. I know they were very discouraged after that first day not making the A/B semi, but they moved on from that and were able to have a great row at the end."
2V8
Lineup: Jack Metzger, Lachlan Webster, Rory McKirdy, Brian O'Rourke, Galen Marteal, Brendan Carney, James Gorell, Jack Schwirtz, Alec Esmond (cox)
Saturday Semifinal: 5th of 5 – 6:05.236
Sunday Fourth-Level Final: 3rd of 5 – 6:08.496
Final Rank: 21st
Coach Davis on the 2V8: "The 2V8 struggled early with a lineup change from Eastern Sprints, and they were never really able to find their rhythm that they had earlier in the season or find the same speed they had earlier in the season, which was frustrating because they're such a talented group. They had a good final today, that was probably their best row of the weekend, but it was a little too late."
3V8
Lineup: Harris Grodin, Cole Dorsey, Jeff Dixon, Shawe Watkins, Colin Burns, Max Hanna, Jon Mabie, Owen Hinkley, Luke Ames (cox)
Saturday Repechage: 5th of 5 – 6:15.439
Sunday Third-Level Final: 3rd of 7 – 6:08.284
Final Rank: 15th
Coach Davis on the 3V8: "The 3V8 had a solid weekend. They had a good final with some decent racing as the day went on. They too were a little discouraged about not making the A/B semi, and when that didn't happen the first day, it's hard to rebound from that because you have two more days of racing. It takes a lot of mental strength to come back from that. So that was good to see from the 3V8 to come back from that today, same thing with the 2V8."
