Colonials earn highest V8 seed in program history
IRA Championship Central
ON THE LINE: The George Washington men's rowing team will send three boats to this weekend's 117th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship, hosted by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), on Lake Natmoa in Gold River, California.
SCHEDULE: Racing commences Friday with morning heats followed by repechages in the afternoon. The semifinal schedule kicks off on Saturday morning with the grand, petite, third-level and fourth-level finals on Sunday.
PROGRESSIONS: For both the V8 and 2V8, the top two boats in each heat automatically advance to Saturday's semifinals, while the rest of the crews will compete in repechages on Friday afternoon. The top boat in each repechage secures a spot in the top semifinal.
For the 3V8, the top two boats in each heat move on to the semifinals, while the remaining boats race again on Friday afternoon. The top two boats in each repechage secure spots in the top semifinal.
SEEDING AND MATCHUPS: After entering the Championship as the 15th seed for the past two seasons, the varsity eight will enter IRAs this season as the 13th seed, the best in program history. GW will face off against Harvard, Brown, Navy, Colgate, and Drexel at 8:50 a.m. PT in its Friday heat.
The 2V8 is also ranked 13th overall and will race against Brown, Princeton, Cornell, Stanford, and the University of California-San Diego (9:50 a.m. PT).
The 3V8, seeded 14th, rounds out GW's morning heats on Friday with a race against Princeton, Syracuse, Brown, and the University of California-San Diego at 10:40 a.m. PT.
HOW WE GOT HERE: The Colonials put together a strong spring on the water to qualify for IRAs. GW earned its spots with a successful showing at the 75th annual Eastern Springs on Lake Quinasigamond, where all four boats advanced out of their respective morning heats into the Petite Finals for the third straight season. The varsity 8 finished 11th with a time of 6:34.924 in their petite final while the 2V8 finished 11th (6:45.370), the 3V8 finished 12th (7:36.719) and the 4V8 finished 12th (7:16.628).
LAST TIME AT IRAs: GW seeks redemption at this year's IRAs after unfavorable conditions on the water derailed its hopes for a high finish last season. After a strong weekend on the water that positioned each boat to either hold onto their seed or improve on it, the Colonials lost out on that opportunity due to strong wind on the race course.
