Colonials came up short vs. No. 21 Bucknell on Friday
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - George Washington women's water polo kicked off its stay at the CWPA Championship on Friday, falling 12-7 to No. 21 Bucknell.
Alana Ponce, Jaleh Moaddeli and Juliette Belanger tallied two goals apiece, but the No. 6 seed Colonials couldn't keep up with the third-seeded Bison in their opener at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The Buff and Blue (6-13) are back in action at the tournament Saturday, facing seventh-seeded St. Francis (Pa.) at 11:30 a.m.
Ponce's goal with 1:22 left in the opening quarter tied the score at three before Bucknell responded with three straight scores and eight of the next 10 to seize control.
GW edged within 11-7 on Allison DeCicco's goal with 5:53 left and had several chances to pull closer, but the nationally-ranked Bison dug in defensively to close out the victory and clinch a spot in Saturday's semifinals.
A day after being named to the All-CWPA First Team, Ponce totaled two goals and two steals, plus a field block and an ejection drawn.
In addition to her pair of goals, Moaddeli grabbed three steals to push her team-leading total to 45 for the season, while Belanger continued a strong rookie campaign, posting her 11th multi-goal effort of the spring.
Samantha Runyon returned to action in net for the Colonials, tallying seven saves.
UP NEXT: GW will face St. Francis (Pa.) for the third time this season after earning a pair of one-goal victories during the regular season. The Red Flash fell to No. 2 seed Princeton, 12-3, earlier Friday. The Colonials will then wrap up their season on Sunday morning against either No. 4 seed Harvard or No. 5 seed Brown.
