GW Student-Athletes Say "Thank You!"

On Wednesday at GW, student-athletes from across GW's 27 varsity sports called more than 1,500 donors to Athletics in the 2018-19 academic year, and wrote hundreds of postcards to share their appreciation for the impact by donors on the GW Athletics student experience. The Thank-athon was part of Flag Day, a campus-wide day of philanthropy and volunteerism at the George Washington University.
Â
"Donors to GW Athletics are making a true difference for our more than 500 student-athletes," said Jennifer Montgomery, Executive Director of Athletics Development. "What is so special working with these student-athletes is their true gratitude. They were excited to make their calls and take the opportunity to get to know the people who help them so much."
Â
Greg Anderberg, a junior on the baseball team, was one of the 26 baseball team members who volunteered to say thank you to donors. Their squad is using the new Fassnacht Clubhouse at Tucker Field for the first time this year.
Â
"Philanthropy makes our lives as student-athletes easier and better than they would otherwise be," Anderberg said. "I know that my teammates and I appreciate it, and we know that we're ahead of our competition in the Atlantic 10 because of our donors. The clubhouse has had a tremendous impact, and brings our team closer and closer every day. The access to new batting cages makes us better each and every day. Our offensive results (GW is second in conference in batting average, runs and slugging percentage) speak for themselves."
Â
Student-athlete alumni are some of the key drivers of the athletics program's philanthropic success, with more than 22% of program alumni giving back to the program each year as part of the Buff & Blue Fund Challenge. The 2019 Challenge is currently underway.
Athletics' donors who did not receive a call on Flag Day should call 202-994-8412 or email buffblue@gwu.edu to confirm their contact information, or update their contact information directly using GW's alumni update form.
