GW Athletics Begins Jersey Recognition Process for 2026-27

Following an inaugural wave of 10 former GW student-athletes and coaches who saw their jersey or name recognized in university athletics' venues in 2025-26, GW Athletics is thrilled to begin the process again for consideration of the next class of honorees to be celebrated in 2026-27.
This special honor for student-athletes and coaches who have achieved extraordinary athletic accomplishments during their careers at George Washington, allows for jerseys to be either retired or honored, with the latter recognition enabling the number to remain in circulation.
Before the formalized process was introduced, only softball's Elana Meyers Taylor, the most decorated U.S. female athlete in Winter Olympics history, had her jersey retired. A banner recognizing basketball titan Red Auerbach also hung in the Smith Center rafters.
A committee meets yearly to consider the next GW greats who might receive this highest of honors.Â

Nominations from the public for a deserving former student-athlete or coach to be considered can now be made here. Nominations to be considered in this cycle must be made before April 24th.Â
