Colonials face Brown, St. Francis (Pa.) and Michigan this weekend
The Colonials are set for a doubleheader Saturday against Brown (11:30 a.m.) and St. Francis (Pa.) (3:30 p.m.) before facing No. 6 Michigan on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
This weekend's results will determine seeding for the CWPA Championship, which runs from April 26-28 at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW (5-10, 0-3 CWPA) dropped a pair of conference games last weekend, holding its own against a pair of nationally ranked foes.
Juliette Belanger was named CWPA Rookie of the Week after scoring three times in a 10-7 setback vs. No. 14 Harvard and netting four more goals in an 11-7 loss to No. 23 Bucknell.
Belanger now ranks second on the team with 30 goals for the season. The first-year from Canada has found the net in 14 of 15 games in all.
HEATING UP:Â Katherine Atherton has scored in three straight games, highlighted by a two-goal effort Sunday vs. Bucknell. It was the second career multi-goal game for the sophomore from California.
Thanks to that recent offensive surge, Atherton sits fifth among Colonials with seven goals on the season. She also ranks fifth with six ejections drawn.
SCOUTING BROWN:Â The Bears (16-11, 0-3) dropped CWPA decisions to Bucknell and Michigan last weekend.
Brown knocked off GW, 12-7, at Marist's Red Fox Invitational on Feb. 24, pulling away with six straight goals in the second half.
SCOUTING ST. FRANCIS (PA):Â The Red Flash (9-21, 0-3) has lost six straight games overall, including a 10-9 thriller vs. GW at Smith Center Pool on March 31.
Alana Ponce scored the game-winning goal for the Colonials as the final horn sounded. The Buff and Blue have won seven of eight meetings in the all-time series.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN:Â The three-time defending CWPA champion Wolverines (18-8, 3-0) are back at the top of the conference standings. Their resume includes 15 wins over ranked teams.
Julia Sellers, a 2018 ACWPC All-American pick, leads Michigan with 48 goals.
UP NEXT:Â GW has a break next weekend before heading to the CWPA Championship, which will feature all seven teams battling for the conference's automatic NCAA berth over three days in Providence, R.I.
