Diving pair begin NCAA qualifying meet
George Washington's Peter Nachtwey and Jake Ortiz are set to compete at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, beginning Monday at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.
Following impressive performances at the Atlantic 10 Championships last month, the Colonials continue on individually at the three-day meet with hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, which will be held March 27-30 in Austin, Texas.
Nachtwey makes his second trip to the Zone meet after being named Most Outstanding Diver at the conference meet in recognition for earning gold on the 3-meter board (354.15) and silver on 1-meter (285.45). It was the first diving gold for a GW man since 1994.
A sophomore from Ohio, Nachtwey broke his own program record on 3-meter in the fall with a score of 387.23 at Smith Center Pool vs. Howard. He also owns the program mark in platform (267.35), which he set at Lejeune Hall in January 2018.
Ortiz earned a spot at the NCAA qualifier for the third time in his career with a bronze-medal effort on 3-meter (320.75) at the A-10 Championships. The senior from New York also took fifth on the 1-meter board (256.60). He secured top-eight finishes on both boards in all four of his appearances at the conference meet.
As his career in Buff and Blue winds down, Ortiz holds the top 1-meter mark in program history. He earned his score of 330.67 vs. Boston College in November 2017.
The Zone meet consists of a preliminary round and finals on a different board each day. The men will contest 1-meter, 3-meter and then platform.
Both Colonials are scheduled to dive the first two days with Nachtwey also competing on platform. Zone A will advance the top six men on 1-meter, five on 3-meter and four on platform to the NCAA meet.
