FRESNO, Calif. - First-year Juliette Belanger netted a career-high five goals to lift George Washington women's water polo to a 13-11 win over Fresno Pacific on Thursday night to close out its spring break trip to California.
Alana Ponce chipped in two goals and three assists for the Colonials, who bounced back from a pair of Wednesday losses to improve to 4-6 on the season.
GW built a five-goal lead at Sunnyside Aquatics Complex and then made the plays down the stretch to hold off Fresno Pacific. The Buff and Blue limited the Sunbirds to one goal over the final 6:55.
The Colonials scored six times in the second quarter to find separation in a tight game, and Belanger's tally in the opening minute of the third quarter gave them their largest lead of the day at 9-4.
Fresno Pacific roared back with five of the next six scores to pull within a goal. GW didn't let the home team get any closer, though.
The Colonials were up 11-10 when Belanger found the net for the final time off a pass from Kira Bruno with 3:52 remaining. Jaleh Moaddeli followed with another goal from Bruno with 1:01 left to extend the margin to 13-10.
