Colonials fell to a pair of nationally-ranked foes Saturday
WASHINGTON - George Washington women's water polo entertained a pair of nationally-ranked foes at Charles E. Smith Center Pool on Saturday.
The Colonials dropped an 11-7 decision to No. 24 Bucknell in the opener before falling 18-4 to No. 14 Harvard in the nightcap.
Emma Shaffer paced the Buff and Blue (4-8) with a combined three goals and an assist on the day, including a carer-high three points in the first game.
No. 24 Bucknell 11, GW 7: The Colonials hung tough against the Bison in the opener to threaten the upset.
After Bucknell built an early 5-2 lead, GW followed with back-to-back goals from Shaffer and Alana Ponce to cut the deficit to one late in the second quarter.
The teams went back and forth out of the halftime break, trading goals until Jaleh Moaddeli's score with 6:10 left in the game pulled GW within a goal again at 8-7. That turned out to be the final goal for the Buff and Blue as Bucknell responded with three straight scores to close out the victory.
Shaffer's career-best point total came via two goals and an assist, while Ponce and Moaddeli also netted two goals apiece. Juliette Belanger scored the other goal for the Buff and Blue.
Sam Runyon posted seven saves and three steals in net for GW and also added an assist on Moaddeli's third-quarter tally. Moaddeli helped the defensive effort by recording a season high-tying five steals, plus a field block.
No. 14 Harvard 18, GW 4: The Crimson took control with an eight-goal first period and cruised to victory in the second game.
Kira Bruno tallied a goal and an assist for GW with Belanger, Shaffer and Allison DeCicco also finding the net. First-year Hayden Carlson made her presence felt on both ends, pacing the Buff and Blue in steals (three) and ejections drawn (four).
