Colonials sit eighth with two days to go
CLEVELAND - Caroline Racke qualified for a pair of A finals and swam a blistering leadoff leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay Thursday to lead George Washington women's swimming on the opening day of the CSCAA National Invitational Championships.
The senior from Powell, Ohio, placed ninth in the 50-yard freestyle (:23.27) and 10th in the 50-yard butterfly (:24.91) and also helped the Colonials take fifth in the relay competing in her home state at Busbey Natatorium.
With two days to go, the Buff and Blue have 117.5 points to sit eighth place out of 42 teams. Rice (207) and Akron (190) are on top of the team standings.
Racke teamed with Emily Zhang, Rebecca Smolcic and Meghan Burton to finish the 200 free relay in 1:32.53, just off their A-10 record pace set at the recent conference championships.
Zhang (13th, personal-best :23.22) and Smolcic (19th, :23.49) joined Racke in scoring in the 50 free, while Burton made the 50 fly finals and took 15th in 24.93 seconds.
Jackie Torrez also reached an A final in the 200-yard individual medley. The junior from California posted a personal-best time of 2:02.09 in prelims before finishing 10th in 2:04.92.
To close the night, GW's team of Torrez, Burton, Zhang and Isabel Berdecio placed 10th in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:44.57.
