Colonials faced Cal State East Bay & Fresno State
FRESNO, Calif. - George Washington women's water polo opened its spring break trip Wednesday with a pair of setbacks.
The Colonials fell to Cal State East Bay, 16-9, to open the day before dropping an 18-8 decision to No. 13 Fresno State in the nightcap.
Jaleh Moaddeli scored a combined five goals in the doubleheader to pace the Buff and Blue (3-6).
Cal State East Bay 16, GW 9: The Pioneers scored six of the first seven goals and went on to take the opener from the Colonials in Hayward, Calif.
GW edged as close as 9-5 on Moaddeli's goal with 4:18 left in the third period, but Cal State East Bay answered with a 4-1 run to restore the cushion.
A native of nearby Los Altos, Calif., Katherine Atherton scored twice for her first career multi-goal effort, and Moaddeli, another Californian, also notched a pair of goals.
First-year Hayden Carlson tallied a goal and an assist, while classmate Megan Tomasi netted her first career goal with Alana Ponce, Allison DeCicco and Kira Bruno also scoring.
