Lacrosse Set for Home Opener on Friday

Colonials to host ECU on Friday, Radford on Sunday
OPENING DRAW: The George Washington lacrosse team will look to notch its first victory of the 2019 season when it hosts ECU for its home opener on Friday at 2 p.m. Two days later on Sunday, the Colonials will welcome Radford to the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 2 p.m. draw.

LAST TIME OUT: GW (0-1) dropped its season opener over the weekend, falling to Longwood in a back-and-forth offensive battle, 14-12. The Colonials held a 36-33 advantage in ground balls, a 15-13 advantage off the draw, and were even with the Lancers with 16 caused turnovers each.

CARLIN COMES OUT HOT: Sophomore midfielder Abby Carlin paced the squad offensively on Saturday with four goals, three of which came in the game's first 14 minutes. The Lagrangeville, New York, native saw action in all 17 games last season and scored two goals on the year. On Saturday, she also registered a team-high five draw controls and picked up three ground balls.

FIRST THINGS FIRST: Tori Hampton was the lone first-year on the team to earn a start in her collegiate debut. The Marlton, New Jersey, product was also second on the squad with three goals. Classmates Cora Broadhurst and Lauren Maline also made their first appearance in the Buff and Blue at Longwood.

SPREADING THE WEALTH: In addition to Carlin and Hampton, six different Colonials found the back of the net in the season opener. Morgan McDonnell added a pair of tallies while the junior trio of Aidan Cage, Christine Weber, and captain Caroline Kiernan added one apiece.

ABOUT ECU: The Pirates (2-1) opened their season with back-to-back victories at home, topping Winthrop, 13-12, on Feb. 8 and besting Gardner-Webb, 18-11, on Feb. 10. ECU saw its first loss of the season over the weekend, falling to No. 3 North Carolina, 21-3, on Saturday.

LAST MEETING: GW dropped ECU, 18-7, in its season opener last year. The Colonials' 18 goals were the most they scored in a game last season. Â

ABOUT RADFORD: The Highlanders (1-0) also opened their season on Saturday, downing Saint Francis (Pa.), 18-13. With the game tied at six at the half, Radford came out hot after the break, scoring 12 more goals to SFU's seven to claim the season-opening victory.

LAST MEETING: The Colonials went head-to-head with the Highlanders for the first time in 2018, defeating them 13-7 to wrap up their non-conference slate with a program-best 7-1 record. The victory was also the Colonials' fifth-straight win, marking the longest streak since the squad's inception in 2002.Â
