Colonials fall, 14-12, in offensive back-and-forth battle
FARMVILLE, Va. – The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Longwood, 14-12, on a snowy Saturday afternoon in Farmville, Virginia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lancers were the first to strike with a goal off of a free position, but the Colonials responded just 22 seconds later with a goal from sophomore Abby Carlin to put GW on the board. Longwood added another tally at the 27 minute mark, but GW answered back with a goal from junior Morgan McDonnell to tie it up at two apiece. The squads stayed knotted at two for 10 minutes before the Colonials began to pull ahead with back-to-back goals from Carlin to complete her season-opening hat trick. The teams continued to battle back-and-fourth for the reminder of the half, with first-year Tori Hampton finding the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career and junior Christine Weber adding to the Colonials' cause, but the Lancers went into the break with an 8-6 advantage.
Carlin notched her fourth tally of the game to bring the Colonials within one to start the second half. Longwood once again struck back with consecutive tallies before Aidan Cage was able to find the back of the net off of the free position to make it 10-8. The Lancers continued to apply offensive pressure and found the back of the net once again, but the Colonials responded with three straight tallies to tie it up at 11 with 15 minutes to play. The Lancers answered back with two of their own before the Buff and Blue were able to bring the game within one with a man-up goal from junior captain Caroline Kiernan. With five minutes left on the clock, GW continued to press on attack, but Longwood scored one more time at the four minute mark and then held on for the 14-12 win.
NOTEWORTHY
• Hampton was the lone first-year on the squad to earn a start in her collegiate debut. Fellow first-years Cora Broadhurst and Lauren Maline also made their first appearance in the Buff and Blue at Longwood.
