Colonials also host home meet vs. Richmond
GW swimming and diving will be tested vs. world-class competition this week with 12 Colonials in action at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships. The meet, featuring a host of Olympians gearing up for the 2020 Games, runs Wednesday-Saturday at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center.
The women's squad will also host Atlantic 10 foe Richmond on Saturday in a 10 a.m. start at Smith Center Pool to close the program's fall schedule.
LAST TIME OUT:Â GW produced a host of standout performances amid a competitive field at the Queens University Fall Frenzy on Nov. 22-24 with the women taking third and the men fifth.
Andrew Cho was named A-10 Co-Performer of the Week after posting a win in the 100 back (:48.56) and a runner-up finish in the 200 back (1:48.09), while the Colonials swept the Rookie of the Week awards with George Aspougalis and Stine Omdahl Petersen honored.
A pair of women's records fell at the meet: Omdahl Petersen took down a six-year-old mark in the 100 breast (1:02.97) and also teamed with Andrea Ho, Meghan Burton and Gemma Atherley on a record swim in the 400 medley relay (3:43.49).
A first-year from Greece, Aspougalis landed a pair of program all-time top 10 performances on the weekend. His time of 54.89 seconds in the 100 breast ranks fourth in program history, and his 1:59.74 finish in the 200 breast is good for fifth all-time.
GRAND STAGE:Â The U.S. Open Championships present an opportunity for the Colonials to measure themselves against top competition in a long-course pool as they head into winter break.
The GW contingent includes a dozen current swimmers, plus 2019 alumna Caroline Racke. The full list of Colonials in action: Cho, Aspougalis, Omdahl Petersen, Meghan Burton, Moritz Fath, Max Forstenhaeusler, Josh Legge, Ryan Patterson, Emils Pone, Youssef Ragab, Kaden Schwaiger and James Torrez.
Several Colonials have recent experience at meets of this magnitude: Pone represented his native Latvia at the World University Games last July, while Fath and Cho swam at the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships a few weeks later.
