Colonials to host Georgetown in the Lerner Health & Wellness Center
SERVING FIRST: The George Washington men's squash team will look to build off its momentum from last season when it kicks off 2019-20 by hosting Georgetown at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts in the Lerner Health & Wellness Center on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
THE CHAMPS ARE BACK: After winning their first-ever Hoehn Cup (B-Division) in 2018, the Colonials proved their commitment and determination at the College Squash Association (CSA) Team Nationals in 2019, holding onto their Hoehn Cup title for the second straight season with an impressive 6-3 victory over Drexel.
Going into CSA Team Nationals, GW was 2-5 against the B-Division field with wins over Navy and Drexel and losses to Western Ontario, Virginia, St. Lawrence and Franklin & Marshall. The Colonials went on to prove their prowess by defeating two of those teams in championship play, edging Western Ontario (5-4) in the quarterfinals and St. Lawrence (7-2) in the semifinal round.
With the title, GW (13-12) finished the 2018-19 season ranked No. 9 in the nation, tying the highest ranking in program history.
MOVING UP: GW has claimed its highest CSA preseason ranking in program history at No. 8. Washington-Jefferson Cup rival Virginia is picked to finish ninth.
NEW FACES: The Colonials will have five fresh faces competing for a spot on the ladder this season. Giza, Egypt, native Moustafa Montaser is expected to make an immediate impact, playing in the top third of the lineup. Montaser comes to the Colonials after representing Egypt at the 2018 World Juniors. Head coach Anderson Good also expects Karim Thabet, a fellow Egyptian, to compete for a top spot in GW's ladder this season.
