Colonials downed Johns Hopkins on Friday night
LEWISBURG, Pa. - GW men's water polo took the first step toward a third straight Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference title on Friday night, downing Johns Hopkins, 17-9, to begin the league championship at Kinney Natatorium.
Andras Levai, Henry Maas and DJ Davis tallied three goals apiece and Matt Taylor was excellent in net with 21 saves to spark the third-seeded Colonials past the sixth-seeded Blue Jays and into a Saturday semifinal vs. No. 2 Fordham at 6 p.m.
In the final game of the night at Bucknell, GW (21-8) used a balanced attack to pull away and claim its fourth win of the season over Johns Hopkins.
Following a back-and-forth start, the Colonials went ahead for good at 4-3 on Jordan Blosser's goal in the final minute of the opening quarter. They built their advantage with a 4-1 edge in the second period before delivering the knockout blow with a strong closing kick.
After the Blue Jays pulled within 12-9 on a goal by Jayden Kunwar with 5:39 remaining, GW ran off five straight goals from five different scorers to finish the game. Nick Schroeder began the burst for the Colonials, and Heath Faulkner's tally in the final minute finished it.
Levai, Maas and Davis shared high-scorer honors for the Buff and Blue, while Atakan Destici provided a lift via two goals and four assists hours after being named to the All-Conference First Team for a fourth time.
Andrew Mavis, another All-MAWPC First Teamer, chipped in a pair of goals and a team-high three ejections drawn, and Blosser scored twice, as well.
An All-MAWPC Second Team pick, Taylor stymied the Blue Jays throughout en route to a career-high save total. Gabriele Simonti also did his part on the defensive end with a team-high five steals.
UP NEXT:Â GW earned a semifinal date with Fordham, which defeated Gannon 16-11 earlier Friday. Saturday's winner advances to face either top-seeded Bucknell or No. 4 Navy in Sunday's final.
The Colonials and Rams split a pair of meetings during the regular season with each winning on the road.
