Colonials claim A-10 road win at St. Bonaventure
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - Tom Cooklin's first career goal was the difference as George Washington men's soccer downed St. Bonaventure, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Marra Athletics Complex for its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season.
In the 74th minute, the first-year from England delivered a beautiful volley from the top of the 18-yard box off an assist from Haukur Hilmarsson to break the scoreless deadlock.
That was enough offense for GW, which limited the Bonnies to three shots in its fourth clean sheet of the season to claim the road victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 74th Minute: After peppering the St. Bonaventure net throughout the night, the Colonials finally broke through. Hilmarsson's cross from the right side was deflected, but the bouncing ball found Cooklin, whose one-time shot was a low rocket into the left side of the net. (GW 1, St. Bonaventure 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- With his first goal, Cooklin became the fourth Colonial, and first rookie, to find the net this season.
- Hilmarsson was credited with his second assist of the fall and his fourth over two seasons in Buff and Blue.
- Noah Lubin earned his first career shutout in the GW net. The senior keeper's only save of the night was a fine one. He dove to his left to knock away a dangerous free kick from Jacob Dyck in the 28th minute.
- GW outshot St. Bonaventure, 14-3, on the night, including 9-0 over the final 45 minutes. The Colonials kept the pressure on St. Bonaventure keeper Trevor Wilson with seven shots on goal in all.
- First-year Liam Emson had an active night around the net, piling up a career-high six shots, including three on target.
UP NEXT: GW makes another A-10 road trip Saturday, visiting Duquesne for a 7 p.m. start. The Colonials will then play three straight home games on the Mount Vernon Campus, starting with an Oct. 15 matchup vs. crosstown foe Howard.
