Colonials host Hawks before traveling to VCU
It's the Colonials' annual Pink Game in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They will be fundraising for Dawn's Ray of Hope, a non-profit created by the family of former Colonial Jason Re in memory of his mother to help families affected by cancer cover their medical expenses. On Saturday, GW will head to VCU for a 7 p.m. start at Sports Backers Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: Last Saturday, GW claimed a 2-1 victory over Davidson on Senior Day at the Vern.
Liam Emson scored the first two goals of his career, including the game-winner in the 77th minute. With the game tied, the first-year forward received a long ball from Drini Redzepi, took a touch around the Davidson goalkeeper and fired a shot into the open net.
Noah Lubin made a pair of saves to collect the victory in net with Davidson's only goal coming on a penalty kick in the 55th minute.
TRUE BUFF AND BLUE: Emson has made a difference up top for GW throughout the season, seeing action in all 14 contests and ranking second among rookies with 739 minutes played.
After his standout effort vs. Davidson, Emson now ranks third among Colonials with five points. The Arlington, Va., native picked up his first career point vs. UMBC on Sept. 17 with an assist on a Sandro Weber goal. He's put 17 of his 26 shots on target this fall.
Emson's family has a proud GW heritage: His father Kenny is a GW Athletics Hall of Fame member who totaled 27 goals and 15 assists as a midfielder for the Colonials from 1985-88 and still ranks eighth on the program's all-time points list, while his mother Marybeth is also a GW graduate and former Colonials swimmer.
WE'LL TAKE OUR CHANCES: GW held an 11-8 edge in shots vs. Davidson and put five tries on goal to three for the Wildcats.
That performance continued a trend: The Colonials have largely dictated play in their five A-10 games, outshooting their opponent in each contest. In those outings, they've averaged 14 shots per game and allowed 7.4.
For the season, GW has held the shot advantage in eight of 14 games. The Buff and Blue has totaled 185 shots (74 on goal) while allowing 155 (63 on goal).
STANDINGS CHECK: At 2-3 in A-10 play, GW enters the week tied for eighth place with La Salle in the conference table. The Colonials will look to finish strong to secure a top-eight finish and a spot in the A-10 Tournament.
Saint Joseph's sits a game back of GW at 1-4 in A-10 action, while VCU remains in contention for the regular season title at 4-1 in league play.
SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S: The Hawks (5-9-1 overall) went on the road to knock off Fordham last Saturday for their first A-10 win. David Grana and Alvin Dahn scored first-half goals to provide the offense necessary to beat the Rams.
Leon Maric assisted both goals vs. Fordham and leads Saint Joseph's with 11 points via four goals and three helpers, while keeper Joseph Boehm ranks among the A-10 leaders with 68 saves.
GW has won three straight in the series to extend its all-time advantage to 19-7-3.
SCOUTING VCU: The Rams took their first A-10 loss last Saturday, falling 2-1 at Rhode Island. Oquin Robinson's late goal halved their deficit, but they couldn't produce the equalizer.
Biska Biyombo leads VCU with four goals and three assists, while Mario Sequeira has played every minute in net and produced a 1.35 goals against average.
GW picked up a 2-1 victory in its last trip to Sports Backers Stadium on Oct. 14, 2017.
UP NEXT: GW travels to Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 2, to wrap up the regular season.
