Men's Water Polo Splits at Harvard Invite

Colonials beat MIT and fell to No. 9 Harvard on Saturday
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - GW men's water polo split a doubleheader Saturday to open the Harvard Invitational.
The 15th-ranked Colonials took down MIT, 14-9, in a morning matchup at Blodgett Pool before falling to the ninth-ranked host Crimson, 14-13, in the afternoon.
Andrew Mavis led the Buff and Blue (15-5) with seven total goals on the day.
GW 14, MIT 9:Â The Colonials closed strong to hold off the Engineers in the opener.
After MIT used a 3-0 run to edge within 11-9 with 7:20 remaining, the Colonials scored the game's final three goals, holding the Engineers scoreless the rest of the way. Mavis, Atakan Destici, and Andras Levai provided the scores that helped the Buff and Blue close out the victory.
GW erased an early 2-0 hole by scoring nine of the next 11 goals. Back-to-back tallies from Henry Maas extended the lead to 9-4 early in the third quarter.
Mavis and Levai netted three goals apiece, while Destici and Maas both notched a pair of scores. Josh Yardley, Isher Gill, Antonin Kralj and Gabriele Simonti contributed goals of their own.
Harvard 14, GW 13:Â The Crimson prevailed in a back-and-forth battle, taking the lead for good on Bruno Snow's goal with 43 seconds remaining.
GW never led in the game but never let Harvard get too far away, either. After trailing by three going into the halftime break, the Colonials responded with the first three scores of the second half to even the score at 10-10 on Jordan Blosser's goal with 3:03 left in the third.
The fourth quarter featured two more ties before Snow's tally provided the game-winning goal for the Crimson.
Destici and Mavis scored four goals apiece with Blosser and Levai each chipping in a pair. The final goal came from Simonti, whose clutch score made it 13-13 with 2:41 left.
