Liam Emson scored both goals for the Colonials
WASHINGTON - First-year Liam Emson scored the first two goals of his career on Saturday afternoon, including the go-ahead tally in the 77th minute, to help GW men's soccer claim a 2-1 win on Senior Day on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Emson put the Colonials on top with a tremendous goal in the 16th minute, flicking a bicycle kick over his shoulder and into the net. After Davidson tied it, the rookie from nearby Arlington, Va., struck again with 13:18 left in regulation off a long ball from Drini Redzepi to send the Buff and Blue to the Atlantic 10 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 16th Minute: Emson's first career goal was a quality one. Headers from Fares Tello and Joshua Yurasits sent the ball to Emson, whose no-look shot banged off the right post and into the net. (GW 1, Davidson 0)
- 55th Minute: A handball in the box gave Davidson a penalty kick, and Jamie DiLuzio buried the attempt to even the score. (GW 1, Davidson 1)
- 77th Minute: Emson chased down a long ball from Redzepi, took a touch around the Davidson keeper and fired a shot into the open net for what turned out to be the game-winning goal. (GW 2, Davidson 1)
- Emson became the first Colonial with a multi-goal effort this season. The rookie forward now ranks third on the squad with his five points.
- Two seniors factored in the scoring: Redzepi picked up his first assist of the season and the eighth of his career, while Tello added his second helper of the season.
- GW outshot Davidson, 11-8, on the day, putting five attempts on target to three for the Wildcats.
- Noah Lubin made a pair of saves in the victory, lowering his goals against average to 1.06 in seven starts.
- GW honored nine Colonials - Lubin, Redzepi, Tello, Colin Anderson, Haukur Hilmarsson, Max Holdsworth, Reese Moore, Gabriel Seemungal and Matt Sipowicz - prior to the match.
UP NEXT: GW wraps its home schedule Wednesday with a visit from Saint Joseph's before facing A-10 foes VCU (Oct. 26) and Dayton (Nov. 2) on the road to finish the regular season.
