Colonials hung tough in 3-0 setback vs. top-ranked Cavaliers
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Facing the nation's top team in a hostile environment, GW men's soccer held its own Tuesday in a 3-0 setback vs. Virginia at Klockner Stadium.
On the day they ascended into the No. 1 spot in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, the Cavaliers netted a 30th-minute goal and added two more in the second half to extend their perfect start to the season.
Boosted by six saves from Noah Lubin, GW's defense held strong against Virginia's pressure for much of the night to keep the Colonials within striking distance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 30th Minute: Robin Afamefuna gave the Cavaliers the lead with a well-placed free kick from about 25 yards out. (Virginia 1, GW 0)
- 62nd Minute: Cabrel Happi Kamseu swung a cross into the box, and Philip Horton headed it home to pad the Virginia advantage. (Virginia 2, GW 0)
- 86th Minute: Bret Halsey added a late score, finishing his own rebound in front after a point-blank save. (Virginia 3, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- Making his third start of the season, Lubin hung tough amid 21 Virginia shots. The GW keeper made three saves over the opening 45 minutes and three more after halftime.
- GW finished with six shots. The Colonials' best scoring chance came with the game scoreless in the 12th minute. Matthew Brummet's long-range strike appeared ticketed for the top right corner of the net before it was tipped just wide by Virginia keeper Colin Shutler. Tom Cooklin recorded the Buff and Blue's other shot on goal in the 80th minute.
- It was Virginia's eighth clean sheet in nine matches this season.
- Graduate student Matt Sipowicz earned his first start in Buff and Blue and logged a season-high 55 minutes in the midfield vs. the Cavaliers.
- It was GW's first matchup vs. a top-ranked opponent since defeating No. 1 Indiana, 1-0, exactly 31 years ago on Oct. 1, 1988.
UP NEXT: GW has a break this weekend before resuming Atlantic 10 play at St. Bonaventure next Wednesday, Oct. 9
