Colonials scored late to knock off Highlanders, 1-0
NEWARK, N.J. – Brady O'Connor's 80th-minute goal propelled George Washington men's soccer to a 1-0 win at NJIT on Saturday afternoon.
With time winding down in regulation at Rutgers-Newark's Frederick Douglass Field, O'Connor broke the scoreless deadlock, heading home a long throw-in from Colin Anderson for his first goal of the season.
It turned out to be enough offense for the Colonials (3-3) to secure the road victory and snap a three-game losing streak as Thor Arne Höfs made six saves to blank the Highlanders (5-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 80th Minute: After several threatening chances, GW finally cashed in for the game's lone goal. Anderson whipped a long throw-in toward a crowd in front of the net, and O'Connor deftly skimmed it past NJIT keeper Victor Pujades. (GW 1, NJIT 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- It was O'Connor's first goal of the season and the fifth of his career. The sophomore from Maryland also scored the only goal in last season's 1-0 win over NJIT at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
- With his on-target heave, Anderson picked up his second assist of the season and fourth career point.
- Höfs made three saves in each half to record his second shutout of the season and the 19th of his career, one shy of Jeff Brown's program record. After GW took the lead, the senior keeper handled the only shot on target he faced by tipping Victor Gomez's long-range blast over the crossbar. The six saves tied his season high.
- Haukur Hilmarsson had an active afternoon for the Colonials, recording a team-high three shots. The graduate student from Iceland's best chance came in the 11th minute when he forced Pujades to make a diving save to keep the game scoreless. He also hit a dangerous free kick just over the bar in the 60th minute.
UP NEXT: After three straight on the road, GW returns home Tuesday to host Binghamton on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 2 p.m. start.
