Oscar Haynes Brown finished with four goals and an assist
Oscar Haynes Brown completed a first-half hat trick before the break and finished with four goals and an assist. The sophomore from England has now totaled seven goals and 15 points through two games.
Drini Redzepi tallied a career-high three assists, while Dylan Lightbourn and Gabriel Seemungal also found the net for the Colonials.
Monday's victory marked the most goals GW has scored in a game in seven seasons under head coach Craig Jones and its largest margin of victory since beating UDC, 7-1, on Sept. 8, 2009. The Colonials are 2-0 for the first time since 2007.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 6th Minute: Haynes Brown didn't waste any time putting the Colonials on top. Colin Anderson sent a long ball down the right side for Haukur Himarsson, whose cross set up Haynes Brown's close-range strike. (GW 1, American 0)
- 13th Minute: Lightbourn added to the lead, finding room in the box to bury his first goal of the season. Haynes Brown and Joshua Yurasits picked up the assists. (GW 2, American 0)
- 19th Minute: Seemungal's first career goal came thanks to some serious hustle off a set piece. The junior defender headed Redzepi's free kick off the post and then charged in with a dive to nod the rebound into the net. (GW 3, American 0)
- 24th Minute: Haynes Brown struck again, finding himself in the right place at the right time on a corner kick. Marcelo Lage headed down Redzepi's corner kick and Haynes Brown tapped in the loose ball. (GW 4, American 0)
- 45th Minute: Haynes Brown completed his hat trick with only 19 seconds remaining in the opening half. The forward took a pass from Max Holdsworth in stride and headed right down the middle of the defense. (GW 5, American 0)
- 69th Minute: Haynes Brown started the second half on the bench before adding his final goal of the game when he deftly redirected Redzepi's curling free kick past the drawn-out keeper. (GW 6, American 0)
NOTEWORTHY:
- Haynes Brown fell just short of the program record of five goals in a game, held by Derya Yavalar (1974) and Roland Romain (1966). Remarkably, the high-scoring sophomore has already surpassed his goal and point totals from last season when he led GW with six goals and 14 points. He was named the A-10 Offensive Player of the Week earlier Monday.
- Lightbourn now has nine goals and 22 points for his career.
- Yurasits has three assists through two games, surpassing his point total from his freshman season.
- GW's nine goals are its most through two games since 1984 when it started with a 6-0 win over Catholic and a 4-0 victory over Lafayette.
- Thor Arne Höfs (two saves in 60:09) and Jason Re (29:51) combined in net on GW's first shutout of the season.
- Jones had a chance to showcase his depth down the stretch with 23 Colonials seeing action in all. Cameron Mathewson, Alhaji Turay, Matthew Brummet, Lucas Marshall and Sam Reavis made their collegiate debuts.
UP NEXT: GW closes a three-match homestand to open the season Saturday when it welcomes Lehigh to the Vern for a 4 p.m. start. The Colonials then hit the road for three straight non-conference matchups.
