Haynes Brown Hat Trick Lifts Men’s Soccer in Opener

Colonials take season opener over Stony Brook
The Colonials trailed 1-0 before Haynes Brown netted his three goals in a 20-minute span. It turned out to be enough to earn them a victory in their season opener at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus. It was the first hat trick for the program since Seth Rudolph scored three times in a win over Saint Joseph's on Nov. 7, 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 23rd Minute: Stony Brook went on top first on a header by Gabriel Fernandes off a free kick from Trausti Birgisson. (Stony Brook 1, GW 0)
- 57th Minute: The score stayed there until early in the second half when Haynes Brown shook free down the center of the field and deposited a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the top right corner. (GW 1, Stony Brook 1)
- 72nd Minute: The Colonials took the lead courtesy of Haynes Brown, who collected a loose ball and threaded a shot from the left side inside the near post. (GW 2, Stony Brook 1)
- 76th Minute: Less than four minutes later, Haynes Brown completed his hat trick on another nifty strike from near the top of the box, this time off a pass from Joshua Yurasits. (GW 3, Stony Brook 1)
- 88th Minute: Stony Brook got one back in the closing minutes with Jarred Dass finding the back of the net, but the Seawolves didn't put another shot on goal after that. (GW 3, Stony Brook 2)
NOTEWORTHY:
- Haynes Brown now has nine goals and 20 points in just 14 career games. After making the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team a year ago, his sophomore season is off to a great start. He scored his three goals Friday on seven shot attempts.
- Yurasits was credited with two assists in the victory, equaling his total from his rookie season. Reese Moore also picked up a helper on Haynes Brown's first goal.
- Thor Arne Höfs made four saves to pick up the victory in net. The senior keeper made two stops in quick succession in the 86th minute, batting down an initial shot from long range and then stonewalling the rebound attempt.
- Three newcomers started their first game in Buff and Blue against Stony Brook – Marcelo Lage, Grant Barrientos and Haukur Hilmarsson. Max Holdsworth and Tyler Jankowski saw action off the bench.
- It was GW's first season opener on its home field since the 2012 season.
UP NEXT: GW stays at home, hosting crosstown foe American on Monday at 4 p.m. The Colonials start the season with three straight on the Vern before playing their next three on the road.
