WASHINGTON - George Washington women's rowing wrapped up the 30th GW Invitational on Saturday morning with its top boats holding strong against stalwarts Drexel and Rhode Island.
The Colonials placed third in each of their Howard W. Wilkins Bowl races on their home Potomac River course to finish tied for fifth in the final team standings with 45 points. Drexel edged Rhode Island, 68-64, for the top spot. The squad did its part to help the Buff and Blue earn the Gilbert H. Hood Trophy for most combined points (men and women) at the event for the second straight season, edging second-place Drexel, 123-119.
"Facing the best boats in the conference in URI, I thought we did a pretty good job competing today," head coach Eric Carcich said. "We always can do better. We've been moving a lot of parts around and we're just trying to find our maximum boat speed. Now, we have four weeks to try and gain some speed and see what we can do to close that gap on URI."
In chilly conditions, GW was even faster than Friday when it won a pair of races and needed to be to keep up with Drexel and Rhode Island. The Colonials were closest with their second Varsity 8, which finished 3.20 seconds back of first-place Rhode Island.
In addition, GW got a second-place finish from its third Varsity 8 in 6:43.30 behind Saint Joseph's.
The Colonials also celebrated a win from a team of alums from the 1998 Varsity 8 that advanced to the NCAA Championship in an exhibition race against two Georgetown entries. Afterward, the group helped dedicate a boat named in their honor.
"Thanks to all the visiting crews who came in this weekend," Carcich said. "It was a lot of craziness with the weather, and I'm just happy that we got the racing in. It's always great to see so many supporters out here at this event, especially the members of the 1998 team that is so important to the history of our program."
GW is back in action next weekend at the two-day Knecht Cup in Mercer, N.J.
