Men's Rowing Sweeps Again at GW Invite

WASHINGTON - George Washington men's rowing swept three more races Saturday, capping a perfect run at the 30th GW Invitational.
The Colonials earned all 78 possible points competing on their home course in front of a strong contingent of fans and alumni to finish tied atop the team standings with Navy. The Midshipmen claimed the Oliver T. Carr Bowl, winning the tiebreaker by virtue of their faster Varsity 8 time.
Those efforts also helped GW take the Gilbert H. Hood Trophy for most combined points between the men's and women's squads at the event for the second straight season, topping second-place Drexel, 123-119.
"As a coach, you can't complain about winning," head coach Mark Davis said. "Having another crew next to you for the full race is mentally very challenging, but our Varsity 8 did a nice job of keeping their focus and being able to win the race. I thought the second Varsity 8 and the third Varsity 8 both had really strong rows today and did a nice job, too."
GW's third varsity 8 topped its time from Friday in handily winning its race in 5:47.10 before the second varsity 8 tallied a 12 second win over Michigan. The Colonials pulled out a down-to-the-wire finish to complete the sweep with its varsity eight crossing in 5:40.50 to edge the Wolverines (5:41.20) and MIT (5:43.80).
"I'm excited about it, but I also realize that we need to keep gaining speed if we want to move up on the teams ranked ahead of us," Davis said. "The focus for the next two weeks is trying to find some more speed."
GW has next weekend off before traveling to Rhode Island to race Brown and Dartmouth on April 21.
