WASHINGTON - George Washington women's rowing picked up a pair of wins on its home course Friday to open the 30th George Washington Invitational, claiming the 1998 Cup and Georges Trophy in the process for besting rivals Georgetown and George Mason.
The Colonials took their varsity 8 and second varsity 8 races on the Potomac River after getting runner-up finishes from their varsity and second varsity 4s. They're third in the Howard W. Wilkins Bowl standings (33 points) behind Rhode Island and Drexel (36 apiece), heading into the final day of racing.
"Good day for women's rowing all around, and I felt like the team rose to the challenge the day offered," head coach Eric Carcich said. "Conditions were fast and bumpy late in the race, but we took advantage of the good water at the right times."
GW's second varsity 8 finished in 6:32.40 to finish 18 seconds clear of second-place Georgetown and 32 seconds ahead of George Mason. In the Buff and Blue's final race of the day, the varsity 8 beat the Hoyas by 4.80 seconds and Patriots by 14 seconds.
"Always good racing when you line up Mason, Georgetown and GW on the same race course," Carcich said.
The GW Invitational concludes Saturday with the action set to begin at 8:40 a.m.
"Looking forward to facing the best in the A10 tomorrow with URI, and we also have a rematch against Drexel, who had it on us last week on their home waters," Carcich said.
