Women's Water Polo Splits vs. CWPA Foes

LORETTO, Pa. - George Washington women's water polo split a pair of games against Collegiate Water Polo Association competition on Saturday at Stokes Natatorium.
The Colonials downed host Saint Francis (Pa.), 15-11, in the morning before falling to Bucknell, 8-7, in overtime in an evening matchup.Freshman Alana Ponce paced GW (10-7) with 10 goals over the doubleheader, including seven in the victory over the Red Flash.
GW 15, Saint Francis (Pa.) 11: The Colonials trailed 5-3 late in the first quarter before scoring the next eight goals to take control against the Red Flash (12-7).
Ponce, Maddy Johnson and Grace Heck all scored twice in the run, which spanned nearly 14 minutes of game time. GW outscored St. Francis, 4-0, in the second quarter and continued the burst after halftime. Heck's goal with 4:01 left in the third quarter extended the lead to 11-5.
In addition to Ponce's seven goals, Heck tallied three goals and an assist and Johnson scored twice. Jaleh Moaddeli pitched in a goal and three assists.
Jacqueline Bywater paced the defense with four steals and a field block. Samantha Runyon made seven saves in the victory.
GW 8, Bucknell 7 (OT): The Bison netted the final two goals of regulation before edging the Colonials in extra time.
GW led 5-3 on Ponce's goal with 2:02 left in the third quarter but didn't score again until overtime. After Bucknell scored three goals in the first three-minute extra period, the Colonials battled back to within 8-7 on Grace Heck's goal with 1:00 left in the second overtime. That turned out to be the last score of the game, though.
Ponce (three goals) and Heck (two goals) again led the way for the Buff and Blue, offensively. Bywater and Dara Bleiberg also found the net against the Bison (9-12).
