Setchko brings 22 years of rowing experience to GW
Marjorie Setchko joins the Colonials for the 2018-19 season after a full summer in Philadelphia coaching the U23 Heavyweight Men's Summer program at the esteemed Vesper Boat Club. Setchko's coached boats churned out strong performances at the 2018 USRowing Club Nationals. Her crews took second in the Intermediate Men's 8+, third in the Elite/Senior Men's 8+ and fourth and fifth in the Intermediate Men's 4+.
Before her time at Vesper, Setchko was the Varsity Women's Lightweight Coach at UC Berkeley from August 2016-2018. There, she coached the 2018 first place winners in the women's 2x and women's lightweight 4+. In 2017 she also helped Cal place first in the ACRA Championship in the women's 2- and 2x categories.
Before her time at UC Berkeley, Setchko coached all over the country for a spectrum of different programs: Head Coach at Episcopal Academy ('93), Vesper Boat Club ('90-'93), and La Salle University ('89-'90).
Her extensive coaching career was a product of her elite reputation of competition within the sport. Setchko represented the US in the 1991 Pan American Games in Havana, Cuba. There, she placed second in the lightweight women's 2-. Before making it onto the US National Team, she was an Elite Rower for Vesper Boat Club. Representing Vesper, she took first place in the 1990 US Rowing National Championships in the elite lightweight women's 4+ and second place in the elite lightweight women's 8+.
Setchko's strong work ethic opened up possibilities, and earned her the spot on the national team, but Setchko could not be limited to just being a rower. After bringing home the silver medal at the 1991 Pan American Games, she coxed the first place elite women's 8+ at the 1992 US Rowing National Championships.
What she brings to GW's women's rowing program is a well grounded coaching background, a duel knowledge in the role and technique for rowers as well as coxswains, and a passion for competition and hard work.
Marjorie Setchko graduated from Cornell University earning a bachelor degree in Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture in 1985.
