GW student-athletes see graduation success six percent higher than NCAA average
The NCAA publicly announced the Graduation Success Rate of all Division I institutions today, with George Washington student-athletes achieving a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 94, six percent higher than the NCAA Division I average of 88, and matching last year's reported mark of 94.
Â
GW's men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country and track, gymnastics, men's rowing, women's soccer, men's and women's squash, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and women's water polo programs all achieved a perfect 100 score.
Â
Notably, men's basketball's perfect GSR of 100 is 15 percent higher than the NCAA average of 85, while a stunning seven programs achieved both a perfect 100 score in both their GSR and federal graduation rate. Women's cross country and track, gymnastics, women's soccer, women's squash, men's and women's tennis and women's water polo have now put together a four year stretch of perfection as measured by the GSR and federal rate.
Â
"It is our highest priority to create a culture that allows GW student-athletes to excel and thrive as they pursue their academic degree and career ambitions," said Director of Athletics and Recreation Tanya Vogel. "The discipline required to compete at the Division I level, while achieving such a high rate of academic achievement speaks to our culture of determination and commitment. I am very proud of our student-athletes, and I am grateful for our coaches, faculty and staff that support their work."
Â
The NCAA developed the Division I Graduation Success Rate in response to college and university presidents who wanted graduation data that more accurately reflect the mobility among all college students today, as the Graduation Success Rate accounts for the academic outcomes of student-athletes who transfer from one institution to another. GSR data is based on a six-year cohort prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education with all scholarship student-athletes across the country in the 2008-09 to 2011-12 freshmen cohorts.
Â
The graduation rate is based on a comparison of the number of students who entered college and the number of those who graduated within six years. The GSR provides information for student-athletes who received athletics aid for any period of time during their freshman year.
