Colonials return to the Vern on Wednesday
Following three straight road games, George Washington men's soccer returns to its home on the Mount Vernon Campus on Wednesday to host St. Bonaventure at 2 p.m. It is the program's annual Pink Game in support of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The cause has particular meaning to senior goalkeeper Jason Re, who lost his mother Dawn to breast cancer in 2011. (Read more here.) His family organized a charity in his mother's memory – Dawn's Ray of Hope – that has raised thousands over the past seven years to help families affected by cancer cover their medical expenses. Fans can donate at the game or via Facebook.
LAST TIME OUT: GW (4-5-1, 0-2 A-10) has been off since falling at George Mason, 3-0, last Wednesday in their annual Revolutionary Rivalry matchup. The Patriots took the lead on Tunde Akinlosotu's goal in the seventh minute and went on to claim the home victory.
HOME AGAIN: GW is 3-1 on its home field this season, entering its first A-10 contest on the Vern. The Colonials have outscored their opponents, 12-5, in those four games. Most recently, they knocked off Binghamton, 3-2, on Sept. 18, rallying from a two-goal deficit to win in overtime.
GW won all four of its A-10 home games in 2017 without allowing a goal. The Colonials are 7-1-2 in their last 10 conference games in the District, dating back to 2015.
RECORD WATCH: Thor Arne Höfs enters Wednesday's tilt tied with Jeff Brown (1976-1978) for the program's shutout record with 20. The senior keeper has posted three clean sheets this season with the most recent one a nine-save performance in a scoreless draw at then-No. 15 Duke on Sept. 25. He's made 36 consecutive starts for the Colonials between the pipes and 52 total for his career.
SCOUTING ST. BONAVENTURE: After two wins to start A-10 play, the Bonnies (5-4-1, 2-1) fell at home to Rhode Island, 3-1, on Saturday.
Kosi Nwafornso is tied for second in the A-10 with six goals in his senior season. Senior goalkeeper Luke Iacobellis has been stout in net, posting five shutouts and a 1.08 goals against average in nine appearances.
COMING UP: The Colonials are back at the Vern on Saturday, hosting VCU on Saturday at 2 p.m. on Alumni Day. The festivities include an alumni game at 11 a.m. and a postgame social.
