Gemma Atherley posted another win Saturday
NORTH MIAMI, Fla. - Gemma Atherley picked up her second individual win in as many days to lead George Washington women's swimming and diving Saturday at the TYR Fall Classic presented by Swiss Timing at Florida International.
Atherley followed her Friday victory in the 200-yard freestyle by taking the 200-yard backstroke to help the Colonials move up a spot in the team standings and place fourth with 387.5 points. Florida Gulf Coast claimed the team title.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Atherley touched in 2:03.78 in her victory. The junior from the Channel Islands also swam the opening leg on GW's 400-yard freestyle relay that finished fourth in 3:31.24. Meghan Burton, Isabela Patino and Emily Zhang also contributed to the relay.
Atherley took third in the B final of the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.31). GW's top finisher there was first-year Andrea Moussier, who fourth in 5:01.77.
- Zhang finished runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.61) and took sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.98).
- Jackie Torrez picked up a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard buttery in 2:07.87.
- First-years Rebecca Smolcic (54.31) and Patino (53.54) scored for the Colonials in the 100-yard freestyle.
- For the second straight day, Gabriella Arendes paced the GW divers. The sophomore from New York took fifth on the 3-meter board with 201.15.
UP NEXT: GW hits the road for a pair of dual meets against tough competition next weekend. The Colonials start at Penn State on Friday before facing Pittsburgh on Saturday.
